How Much Compost Do You Need?

How to estimate the correct amount of compost material needed:

To Figure the Area of a Rectangle

Length x Width x Depth (measured in feet) = Total Cubic Yards

  • Multiply the length by width by depth of area to be filled.
  • Divide that by 27 cubic feet to get the total amount of cubic yards in the area you are filling.

NOTE: When ordering, please allow for additional material to compensate for loss of volume due to compaction method and type of material.

To Figure the Area of a Circle

Diameter x .5 = Radius (measured in feet)
(Radius x Radius) x 3.14 x Depth = Cubic Feet

  • Divide Diameter in half to determine the Radius.
  • Multiply the Radius by itself.
  • Multiply that total by 3.14.
  • Multiply that total by the Depth to get Cubic Feet.
  • Finally, divide by 27 to get the total amount of cubic yards in the area you are filling

    • EXAMPLE:
    • 18' X 3' Deep

      18' x .5 = 9'
9' x 9' = 81 Square Feet

      81 x 3.14 = 254.34 Area of Circle

      254.34 x 3' (Depth) = 763.02 Cubic Feet

    763.02 divided by 27 = 28.26 Cubic Yard

NOTE: When ordering, please allow for additional material to compensate for loss of volume due to compaction method and type of material.
