The Regulations: What are they?

Organic Waste ContainerIn October 2014, California passed Assembly Bill 1826 requiring all businesses, including multi-family dwellings, to recycle their organic waste. By January 1, 2016 all California jurisdictions must implement an organics recycling program and by April 1, 2016, all businesses generating at least 8 cubic yards of organic waste per week will be required to recycle this material.

What is "Organic Waste"?

Organic waste includes food scraps, green waste, landscape and pruning waste, non-hazardous food waste and paper waste that has been soiled with food.

The AB 1826 Timeline

AB1826 TimelineJanuary 1, 2016: Jurisdictions to implement Organics Recycling Programs.

April 1, 2016: Businesses generating eight (8) cubic-yards or more of organic waste weekly must arrange for organics waste recycling services.

January 1, 2017: Businesses generating four (4) cubic-yards or more of organic waste weekly must arrange for organics waste recycling services.

August 1, 2017: Jurisdictions Report Progress on Organics Recycling Programs to CalRecycle.

January 1, 2019: Businesses generating four (4) cubic yards or more of solid waste weekly must arrange for organics waste recycling services.
